Claude was down — Live updates on the latest AI service outage

Claude logo.

The popular AI chatbot Claude experienced a brief outage today, with most users able to. We saw a sharp rise in reports on Downdetector from around 11:45 a.m. ET to approximately 12:15 p.m. ET.

Anthropic was pretty quick to acknowledge the outage, as the company is usually fairly responsive to issues. Users on social media and on Downdetector reported issues logging into the service, but with the company now implementing a fix, it seems things are mostly back to normal.

The reports come pouring in

Downdetector reports rose quickly, with thousands of people hitting the popular outage reporting website to say that something is wrong with Claude AI.

It's not just you, Claude is down

Claude's parent company, Anthropic, has officially acknowledged that there's an outage happening with its popular AI service.

An official update

Claude posted an official update, though the company doesn't seem to have much in the way of news, simple saying, "We are continuing to investigate elevated errors on Claude.ai, primarily affecting login. We will provide an update as soon as possible."

Fixed already?

Claude appears to be fixed already, as Downdetector reports have dropped into the 300 range after peaking at more than 4,000.

A 'major outage'

Surprisingly, Claude is calling this a "major outage," even though Downdetector reports appear to have dropped quickly. Is the update still going or has it already ended? We'll keep you posted.

Claude is down a lot

As someone who spends a lot of time watching for and reporting on outages, it seems that Claude is down very frequently. They're usually short outages, often lasting 10-15 minutes before users start reporting that everything is working again.

It's not ideal for Claude users who rely on the service for getting work done, but at least they're relatively quick and painless.

Is there something on Anthropic's back end that needs work to stop these little blips from happening? I'm not entirely sure, but hopefully the company can scale up to meet the increased demand of users.

Identified the issue...

It looks like the issue is locked down. "Identified - We have identified the issue affecting Claude.ai and Claude Code logins. We are working to apply a fix for this issue, and will provide an additional update as soon as possible," said Anthropic on its Status page.

Reports almost gone

It looks like the reports have dropped almost to the baseline, which means it's pretty safe to say this outage is over.
