A classic car driver who hit and killed a Deliveroo moped rider while travelling at high speeds through south London has admitted causing death by dangerous driving.
Jason Hoblyn, 51, was at the wheel of reconditioned Ford Popular when he crashed into 25-year-old delivery driver Marcos Mateus Alves in St Helier Avenue, Merton.
Hoblyn was speeding at the time of the crash, while driving with his older brother Richard Hoblyn, 58, who was in a classic Ford Anglia.
At the Old Bailey on Thursday, Jason Hoblyn pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving while his brother pleaded not guilty to an identical charge.
Hoblyn’s barrister, Ian Charles Bridge, told the court: “He can’t sleep, he is heartbroken and devastated by what he has done.”
The crash happened on May 29 last year at around 4.20pm, and Brazilian-born Mr Alves – known to friends as Mateus – was declared dead at the scene less than an hour later.
Judge Philip Katz KC agreed to transfer the case to Kingston crown court where Richard Holbyn, who lives in Farnborough, Hampshire, is due to stand trial and his brother will ultimately be sentenced.
Jason Holbyn, from Mitcham, was disqualified from driving after entering his guilty plea, and both brothers were set free on unconditional bail.
A further hearing is due to take place at Kingston crown court on November 17.
