Clare told they were 'losers in big decisions' v Kilkenny as Brian Lohan says referee didn't have best game

Referee Colm Lyons has been criticised by some of the calls he made in Sunday's All-Ireland semi-final between Kilkenny and Clare.

The Cats defeated Clare by 1-25 to 1-22 at Croke Park to advance to this year's decider with Limerick, but some people felt the man in the middle got a couple of calls wrong, especially in the second half.

Clare had the ball in the back of the net at one stage, but the referee blew the whistle before the Clare player took his shot as he pulled back play for an earlier foul to award the Banner County a free.

Liam Sheedy, who was on punditry duty for RTE, disagreed with the decision and said: "It was a referee mistake as far as I can see because he thought Huw Lawlor had won possession of the ball and he blows the whistle. We could clearly hear the whistle but the reality is he should have let that play on.

"You would have to say over the course of the 70 minutes, Clare were the losers in terms of the big calls.

"I felt watching the game they've probably come out on the wrong side of it and that was a big moment. I think a goal at that stage might have been enough to get Clare (over the line)."

Jackie Tyrell was also critical of a decision the referee made at the other end of the pitch and believes Clare defender Adam Hogan should have been shown a black card for hitting Eoin Cody with his hurl as he tried to prevent him getting in on goal.

He commented: "It's fairly straight forward to me. Eoin Cody is going in along the endline and Adam Hogan comes across and strikes with the hurl so it's careless.

"It is a goalscoring opportunity so I thought for a minute he was hunting cattle the way the way he swipes with his hurl. It is a black card and he gives him a yellow card. I don't know why."

Clare manager Brian Lohan appeared to not want to be too critical of the referee after the game, but said he felt Lyons didn't have his best day.

He told RTE: "Everyone has tough jobs to do up here so it's a tough place to be for a referee but maybe he didn't have his best day today."
