Clare community 'in shock' after brutal stabbing of elderly man in London

A Clare community is in "deep shock" over the stabbing of an 87-year-old man in London.

Locals in Ennistymon were shocked to hear the news of Thomas O'Halloran's death after the elderly man was stabbed while on his way back from busking outside a Tesco in London, where he lived, to raise money for Ukraine.

Thomas had three sons and moved to the British capital shortly after World War II

New footage has been revealed taken just 20 minutes before he was fatally attacked just one mile away from the supermarket in Greenford, west London.

Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway is a former representative of Clare County Council for Ennistymon and spoke of the community's "deep shock" after the horror incident.

He said: "The news of the brutal murder of Thomas O’Halloran has shocked the people of Ennistymon & North Clare. It is almost unbelievable, that a man of his age using an electronic mobility device, was targeted and murdered in broad daylight. It is truly shocking.

"I sincerely hope the perpetrators are brought to justice as soon as possible.

"Tommy’ as he was known left Ennistymon for London 71 years ago but travelled home almost every year until about 10 years ago.

"He was a very popular man in the Greenford area of London where he regularly played music and often busked for charity. Most recently, he raised money for the Ukrainian community living in London.

"I would like to offer my deepest sympathies to the O’Halloran family both in London and Ennistymon at this very difficult time for them," Senator Conway concluded.

Police believe Thomas was stabbed in Western Avenue shortly after 4pm, before managing to travel around 75 yards to Runnymede Gardens where he flagged down a passerby.

Detective Chief Inspector Jim Eastwood, who is leading the investigation, said: “We are keen to identify the man in the CCTV images as a matter of urgency.

"He is clearly a dangerous individual and people are advised not to approach him, but to call us immediately on 999 if they know him or have any information regarding his whereabouts."
