Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is an upcoming turn-based RPG that is described as an homage to the classics in the genre and has recently shown off some gameplay with a new trailer.
The game made headlines earlier this year when it was announced during Xbox's big Summer Game Fest showcase in June. This was in no small part due to its evolutionary turn-based combat and beautiful photorealistic graphics.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 New Trailer
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 looks like it is a serious step forward for turn-based RPGs and the fact that the reveal was from an independent developer made up of veterans from Ubisoft only caught more fans' attention.
A new gameplay presentation was led by developer Sandfall Interactive's CEO and creative director, Guillaume Broche alongside COO and producer Francois Meurisse. It showed just how gorgeous the world of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 really is, according to GamesRadar.
Broche then took the controller and played an early build of the game that included the second level.
This particular preview introduces the chief protagonist and resourceful engineer Gustave, who is on a mission alongside scholar Lune to find Maelle, who is the youngest of the expedition's roster and is Gustave's foster sister.
The first thing that many fans noticed about Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is just how amazing the game's character models look. Even their faces looked stunning, which is something that Broche revealed was thanks to Epic's Metahuman technology.
The footage also showed that every environment found in the game offers players something distinctive.
The region, known as Flying Waters, is a mysterious area that defies conventional physics, which presents a unique setting that is both underwater and not at the same time, said the PlayStation Blog.
A Fantastical and Magical Setting
The developer's surrealistic approach is central to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's overall game design as it aims to immerse players in a world where the impossible becomes possible.
Inspirations for the upcoming turn-based RPG's surrealist art are woven throughout and create a striking experience that constantly keeps players on the edge of discovery.
The game's setting was teased during the previous showcase and it has squads of adventurers fighting in order to defeat "The Paintress." The latter is gradually shaving off years of people's maximum lifespans.
The protagonist and other characters that players will travel alongside are Expeditioners who are tasked with finding The Paintress. In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, each character will have their own unique battle mechanic as well, according to Engadget.
