GUWAHATI: Ahead of the ensuing Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) polls, residents questioned the civic body about the measures it has taken to mitigate floods that wreak havoc every year. The situation has worsened in the last 20 years due to unplanned urbanisation and massive encroachment on the wetlands and water bodies.
Experts, who have been studying the problem of rapid and haphazard urbanisation in the city for years, said the worsened flooding coupled with several other civic issues, including failure in waste management, will force the people to abandon the city in the next 20 years.
