PUNE: The civic body has planned an outreach programme to boost public participation in the Swachh survey.
“We are focusing on reaching out to public through various mediums. Major emphasis is being given on social media. The citizens should participate in the competition and other activities to be carried out as part of the survey,” said Kunal Khemnar, additional commissioner, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), at a press conference on Tuesday.
According to civic activists, though the survey is a good initiative, its practical usage and implementation is not taking place. “The infrastructure built for garbage processing and disposal is not properly functioning. The public funds spent on it go to waste if these unit don’t function at full capacity,” said Vivek Velankar of Sajag Nagrik Manch, a citizen’s group.
Pune secured the fifth position among cities with more than 10lakh population in the Centre’s cleanliness survey in 2021. As a municipal corporation with 1 lakh-plus population, Pune ranked eighth. The PMC came 15th in 2020. The survey work for 2022 ranking will start from March.
The Swachh Survekshan 2021 survey was conducted by the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs.
Pune scored 4,900.94 points and bagged an award for best self-sustainable big city, while Pimpri Chinchwad scored 3,874.20 points. A total of 48 cities were surveyed in the category of 10-40 lakh population on various parameters, including feedback from citizens.
