Church bells to ring out at noon to mark the Queen's death

Church bells around the country will ring out at noon to mark the Queen's death.

The Church of England is encouraging parish churches, chapels and cathedrals to ring their bells for an hour from noon on Friday September 9. As a mark of respect, bells will be muffled where possible.

Flags will be flown at half-mast until the day of the funeral, other than for a short period on Saturday after Charles III is formally proclaimed as king.

Durham Cathedral confirmed its bells will ring 96 times - one for each year of the Queen's life - at minute intervals

The Bishop of Durham, Paul Butler, said: “Her Majesty has served this nation with such deep love for the people and care for the well-being of all. Her devotion to her duty and responsibilities have been amazing. All of this has been firmly rooted in her deep personal faith in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Saviour.

"We give thanks to God for her, knowing that she rests in peace and will rise in glory. Our prayers are with our new monarch, King Charles, all the Royal Family and our nation in this time of sadness and grief.”

Durham Cathedral posted in a social media update: "It is with great sorrow that we learn of the passing of Her Majesty The Queen. The Lord receives her into his loving embrace.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Royal Family at this time."

Bells will ring out again on Saturday, but unmuffled, to mark Charles III's ascension to the throne, as per guidance from the Church of England. Bells will then be muffled again until the day of the Queen's funeral.

The Church of England has an online condolences book open to allow people to make tributes to Queen Elizabeth II. Churches are also encouraged to open for prayers and services. The memorial book can be signed here.
