The mother of a man accused of the manslaughter of Ivona Jovanovic has told a court she believed the victim had broken a nail and not been shot at her Gold Coast property almost three years ago.
Christos Panagakos, 30, is accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend in the stomach at a Highland Park home in September 2019.
He is facing a committal hearing in the Southport Magistrates Court over the 27-year-old woman's death.
Police have alleged that there was no intent in the incident but that a gun discharged, which led to Ms Jovanovic's death.
Mr Panagakos, who has alleged links to outlaw motorcycle gangs, was charged with manslaughter and unlawful possession of a weapon in January last year after detectives launched a 16-month investigation after Ms Jovanovic's death.
The woman was getting ready for a night out with friends at the Highland Park property before the shooting.
She later died from her injuries.
Mr Panagakos's mother Michelle Panagakos told the court she had been talking with Ms Jovanovic about her hair shortly before Ms Jovanovic was shot, before going into another room to do some laundry.
Ms Panagakos said she heard a noise in the kitchen but initially believed it was a metal bar stool falling over, not a gun being discharged.
She said when she came out of the laundry she could see Ms Jovanovic pacing back and forwards.
"She was walking up and down and she basically said she'd been shot and I could see next to her a gun spinning around on the ground."
The court heard Mr Panagakos was coming up the stairs putting on a jumper at the time of the shooting and another man, who Ms Panagakos could not identify, was behind him.
She told the court Mr Panagakos asked Ms Jovanovic after she'd been shot: "What's f***ing wrong? What's f***ing wrong with you?"
The court heard both the mother and son called the ambulance, but Ms Panagakos was not aware the injuries were critical at the time she phoned triple-0.
Ms Panagakos told the court her son had been comforting Ms Jovanovic and placed a towel under her head while waiting for paramedics to arrive, but left the house when "he could see the ambulance lights and sirens".
Another man, Daine Walker, who was at the house at the time Ms Jovanovic was shot gave evidence that he was so intoxicated by drugs — including ice, GHB and Xanax — that he could not recall what occurred that night.
The court heard police allege Mr Walker bundled up guns that were at the property and took them outside on the night of the death.
"I can't remember the last 10 years of my life. If I could help, I would help. I was heavily sedated at the time," Mr Walker said.
The committal hearing continues.
