Christophe Soumillon facing uncertain future after owner slams 'unconscionable' act

Jockey Christophe Soumillon could be facing a long spell on the sidelines after allegedly pushing Irish jockey Rossa Ryan from his horse during a race on Friday.

The incident occurred at Saint Cloud in France on Friday. During the 12.20 race, Soumillon appears to barge into Ryan, sending the Irishman crashing to the ground.

Thankfully, Ryan was able to walk away from the incident unscathed. While Soumillon apologised on TV after the race, he was still slapped with a 60-day racing ban.

But things could be about to get worse for the Belgian, and his future with the Aga Khan Racing group is up in the air after Princess Zahra Aga Khan slammed the jockey's actions.

"We talked about what we could do and according to the rules of racing it was too close to this weekend, so we're concentrating on the racing and will talk to Christophe on Monday," said the Princess.

"Obviously it was an unconscionable, unthinkable thing to happen and to do.

"As a team we are going to have a proper conversation with Christophe.

"We are still digesting it and we haven't had a chance yet to all sit down together.

"It was a very difficult thing to watch and it's very lucky that nobody got hurt."

Princess Zahra Aga Khan isn't the only associate of Soumillon to suggest that he perhaps shouldn't have been allowed to race this weekend. The owners of Malavath, who Soumillon rode on Sunday, believe that the jockey shouldn't have been allowed to compete, while France Galop also confirmed that they didn't want him to race.

As the 60-day ban doesn't kick in until October 14th, Soumillon was free to ride over the weekend. The 41-year-old featured in a number of races at Paris Longchamp on Saturday and Sunday, finishing in the top five on seven occasions and taking home €126,000 in prize money aboard Erevann in the Prix Daniel Wildenstein on Saturday.
