Christmas markets across Scotland cancelled as strong winds hit

A NUMBER of Christmas markets across Scotland have been forced to cancel amid a yellow warning for wind.

Gusts of up to 50-60mph are expected widely across the majority of Scotland, with some areas reaching up to 80mph.

A yellow wind warning is in place for the majority of the country until 11.59pm on Saturday night.

Traders in Glasgow, Renfrewshire and Lanarkshire have been forced to cancel markets due to the high winds.

Bishopton, Bothwell, Paisley and Chatelherault markets have all been forced to cancel the weekend before Christmas.

The organisers of Chatelherault Market said in a statement on social media: “Unfortunately, we have had to cancel this Saturday’s market due to the weather forecast showing wind gusts of 48mph and over.

“We hope to see everyone on December 29 for the final market of the year.”

Park Lane Market in Shawlands in Glasgow also issued a notice to say it had cancelled its final market of the year.

Bosses said in a post on Facebook: “With great regret we have come to the decision to cancel the markets this weekend due to the high wind warnings.

“The safety and enjoyment of our visitors and traders is paramount to us and after last weekend’s battle with the elements that we won, it seems they are coming back for round two, after what seems like a Rocky montage of training.

“And we do not want to risk anything right before Christmas. It’s a real shame to have to cancel out our last dates of the year.

“We take pride in running the market through rain or shine and haven’t cancelled since the ‘beast from the east’ in 2018.

“If you are still looking for gifts, keep an eye on posts during the weekend to support the traders who were supposed to be at the market this weekend.”
