Christmas holidays will come quicker for South Ayrshire pupils this year as the council have announced an additional public holiday will take place in December due to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.
As the Queen’s state funeral took place on an established public holiday, many councils across the UK pushed the public holiday back 24 hours with schools closed for three days instead of two last week.
South Ayrshire schools and council staff returned to work as planned with an additional public holiday under consideration.
The council have now confirmed they will now honour that holiday on Friday, December 23 with schools closing the day before on the Thursday (December 22).
A statement from South Ayrshire Council said: “At cabinet on Tuesday, September 27, council considered the provision of an additional public holiday due to the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II taking place on an established public holiday in South Ayrshire.
“We can confirm that this has been approved for Friday, December 23.
“All South Ayrshire schools will now close on Thursday, December 22.”
