Christian Eriksen hit by coin in interview after goal with first touch on Denmark return

Christian Eriksen was hit by a coin during a post-match interview after making a stunning return to the international stage with Denmark.

The playmaker is back on the pitch after suffering a cardiac arrest in the summer during Euro 2020.

He has resumed his club career at Brentford having left Inter Milan and is back representing his country. Eriksen found himself in familiar surroundings on Saturday night.

His Denmark side took on the Netherlands at the Johan Cruyff Arena, losing 4-2, although the 30-year-old scored within minutes of his return.

However in his post-match interview Eriksen was targeted and with a coin. Whilst speaking the Bees star looked down after the object appeared to hit him on the arm.

He said on his return to Amsterdam: "It has always been lovely place and today is an even more special place for me to play my first international game in this stadium."

On his goal he added: "I was happy the ball came to me. I thought it was a lovely finish and to start my international comeback like this is a perfect way."

Eriksen won his 110th cap after coming on as a second-half substitute. He could've grabbed a brace but another of his efforts came back off the post. Eriksen received a standing ovation from both sets of fans with Dutch boss Louis van Gaal also applauding.

The former Tottenham man has been fitted with a defibrillator and he could not hide his joy at being back playing. He said: "If you take away the result, I'm one happy man. To go through what I've been through, being back is a wonderful feeling."

Denmark have already qualified for the World Cup in Qatar later this year having topped a group that included Scotland.

They reached the last four at Euro 2020, losing to England in extra-time. Eriksen's plan is to be included in the final squad for the tournament this winter. "I am looking forward to playing in Qatar but there is a lot of games in between," he added.

Eriksen took to social media following the game in the Dutch capital and said: “Can’t say how much I’ve missed this feeling." Steven Bergwijn scored a brace for the hosts including the opener before the Dane levelled. Nathan Ake and Memphis Depay then made it 3-1 at the break before Eriksen halved the deficit. Bergwijn then restored the Netherlands' two-goal cushion.
