Chrissy Teigen and John Legend found a bold alternative to conventional Christmas tree decor – their playful ornaments are unlike any I've seen before

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend.

For anyone who's a follower of the celebrity style section, you'll know that Chrissy Teigen and John Legend's home is a source of constant design inspiration – and, of course, the holidays are no exception.

Designed by the acclaimed Jake Arnold, the couple's home is renowned for its playful yet quietly luxurious use of hues and shapes – from their waterfall kitchen island to the tree-like art sculpture surrounding their staircase. It's no surprise, then, that their Christmas tree decor is just as revolutionary.

When decorating a tree, it's common to narrow your focus to the top and the branches – after all, you'd be forgiven for believing that these were the only areas worth dressing. However, in a break from convention, Teigen and Legend have drawn attention to the floor surrounding the tree. Instead of adding their statement ornaments to the branches, they've opted for oversized alternatives that dress the area below – and the result is unlike any Christmas tree arrangement I've seen before.

Shop the look

As a celebrity style editor, it's my job to observe the design trends that are shaping how these figures decorate over the holidays – and this year, I've seen an increasing number turn to maximalism. Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra's 'more is more' Christmas tree makes a case for bold and colorful Christmas decor, while Christie Brinkley has filled her branches with playful, retro-inspired lights and ornaments. Though this post isn't from this year, Teigen and Legend's arrangement takes things a step further (and I can't wait to see if they follow suit for 2024).

Rather than compiling the lights, colors, and ornaments together in their tree, they've brought their maximalist focal point to the floor – reminding us that there is more to Christmas tree decoration than the tree itself. We also need to consider the space around the branches because, as they demonstrate, this can be the most impactful area of all. It's changed how I think about my tree decor this year because this space is important – whether you're a maximalist or not.
