Chris Wood starts for Nottingham Forest just one day after Newcastle United transfer

Chris Wood has been immediately thrown into a Premier League relegation fight at Nottingham Forest. Just over 24 hours ago, Newcastle United announced the 31-year-old’s departure on loan until the end of the season.

Wood arrived on Tyneside last January for a hefty £25million in the Magpies’ hour of desperation, but scored just five goals in 39 games for United.

Callum Wilson faced a lengthy spell on the sidelines and, with relegation looming, Toon chiefs stumped up an inflated fee to sign Wood - and weaken Burnley in the process. Bottom-half strugglers Forest have now taken a punt on the New Zealand international.

Despite his poor form in a black-and-white shirt, Steve Cooper has wasted no time in throwing him straight into the action. The Reds travel to Bournemouth aiming to extend their five-point cushion on the bottom three.

A two-man attack alongside Brennan Johnson could help Wood rediscover his goalscoring touch. Throughout his time on Tyneside, Howe deployed him as the central striker in a 4-3-3 formation.
