Chris Wood praises ‘incredible’ Newcastle United supporters in emotional farewell message

Chris Wood has honoured Newcastle United supporters in a farewell message following his Nottingham Forest loan move. Just under a year at the club saw the 31-year-old lead the line in the second half of last season.

Callum Wilson’s lengthy injury forced the Magpies to sign a striker and Wood answered the call. A hefty £25million price tag raised eyebrows and, while he did not repay that fee back with goals, his work rate could never be questioned.

Signing Alexander Isak in the summer forced him further down the pecking order at St James’ Park. It soon became clear Wood was always going to be a short-term fix, with Eddie Howe limiting his game time to last-minute cameos from the bench.

Strugglers Forest find themselves in a similar situation to Newcastle last season, battling to maintain their Premier League status. The promise of first-team football proved too much for the New Zealand international to turn down and a permanent move could be on the cards in the summer.

Posting on Instagram, Wood hailed Newcastle fans as “incredible”, with special mention also paid to his Toon teammates. He wrote: “A short note to say thank you to everyone at this special club. Especially my teammates, the coaches and all of the support staff. You guys are amazing to work with.

“And of course, to the supporters - what an incredible atmosphere you guys give the team. It really does lift everyone... I'll be cheering along with you all for the rest of this season!”

Kieran Trippier and Jacob Murphy were also among the well-wishers once the deal was completed.
