Chris Sutton weighs into Gary Lineker BBC row as he calls for 'messy' Match of the Day resolution

Chris Sutton hopes the BBC find a resolution to the “messy” situation after the Match of the Day mutiny that also had an impact on his 606 radio phone-in alongside Robbie Savage.

The Record Sport columnist and former Celtic hero spoke out in the wake of the meltdown at the public broadcaster as football shows were decimated over the Gary Lineker tweet storm. The 62-year-old former England striker was pulled off air following his anti-Government social media stance which triggered chaos at BBC HQ.

Match of the Day aired on Saturday night but without pundits or commentary and lasted just 20 minutes and the astonishing fallout saw earlier scheduled shows Football Focus, Final Score and radio coverage pulled as a string of pundits backed Lineker. Sutton, who appeared on his usual BT Sport but not his usual post mach BBC slot, took to social media, saying: “I hope Gary Lineker and the BBC resolve this messy situation and Gary is back on MOTD soon but I’d have loved to have worked on our football phone in tonight and chatted about football and all of the days games.”

BBC general director Tim Davie apologies on Saturday night, saying: "I’m sorry audiences have been affected and they haven’t got the programming. As a keen sports fan I know to miss programming is a real blow and I’m sorry about that. We are working very hard to resolve this situation and make sure we get output on air."
