Chris Sutton explains why Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp 'must be banned'

Chris Sutton has called for Jurgen Klopp to be banned following Liverpool's thrilling 4-3 home win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Klopp celebrated Diogo Jota's 94th-minute winner in the face of the fourth official John Brooks and was subsequently shown a yellow card by referee Paul Tierney.

The German then said post-match: "How they can give a foul on Mohamed Salah (before Tottenham's third goal)? We have our history with Tierney, I really don’t know what he has against us, he has said there is no problems but that cannot be true.

"How he looks at me, I don’t understand it. In England nobody has to clarify these situations, it’s really tricky and hard to understand. My celebration was unnecessary, which is fair, but what he said to me when he gave me the yellow card is not okay."

The PGMOL have since issued a response, saying: "Match officials in the Premier League are recorded in all games via a communications system and having fully reviewed the audio of referee Paul Tierney from today’s fixture, we can confirm he acted in a professional manner throughout including when issuing the caution to the Liverpool manager so, therefore, we strongly refute any suggestion that Tierney’s actions were improper.”

The ECHO understands the FA will be looking into Klopp’s comments and that he could now be facing a possible FA charge. But former Premier League winner Sutton believes that would not go far enough.

Writing in the Mail, Sutton, who won the title in 1995 with Blackburn Rovers on a dramatic final day at Anfield, said: "Yet again we’re talking about Klopp’s bad behaviour and the foul example he is setting for the millions of influential fans watching from home.

"This goes all the way down to grassroots, where referees who give up their Saturdays and Sundays for little in return are abused for their trouble.

"Profiles don’t get much bigger than Klopp’s and you hope he will have cringed when watching back the footage of him flying towards Brooks and pulling his hamstring.

"The Football Association need to get a grip on all this. A slap on the wrist will not do. A fine isn't enough of a deterrent. Only a ban will work."
