Chris Rock ‘didn’t know’ Jada Pinkett Smith had alopecia before Oscars

Chris Rock was reportedly unaware Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss was down to alopecia when he made a bald joke about her at the Oscars.

It has been claimed the comedian has yet to speak to Will Smith after the actor struck him over the joke and shouted at him.

Rock, 57, reportedly went straight back to his dressing room following the incident but it was said he always had “no intention of staying”.

A source told TMZ the former Saturday Night Live star did not know about Pinkett Smith’s condition and he “doesn’t have a mean bone in his body”.

After the uproar, Smith has since issued an apology to Rock on Instagram.

The dad-of-three reflected “violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive” and called his behaviour “inexcusable”.

“Jokes at my expense are part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally,” Smith wrote in an Instagram post.

“I would like to publicly apologise to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be.”

He also extended his apology to the Williams family, whose lives the movie he won his Oscar for was based on, and to the organisers of the awards show.

The organisers behind the Oscars have launched a formal investigation into what happened.

“We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law,” they said in a statement.

However, Academy Governor Whoopi Goldberg insisted they won’t be taking back Smith’s Oscar.
