Chris Rock breaks silence after Will Smith Oscar slap and says 'still processing'

Chris Rock has broken his silence after being smacked in the face by Will Smith at the Oscars.

The comic was performing at his sold-out comedy gig in Boston on Wednesday night and fans had been waiting to see if he mentioned the dramatic incident.

Rock said he was "still processing" what had happened.

Dressed in white, the Down To Earth star took to the Wilbur Theatre stage and said: "Sooooo, how was your weekend?!'

Rock was greeted with a standing ovation then continued: "Let me be all misty eyed and s***" and was reported to have tears in his eyes.

"I don't have a bunch of s*** to say about that, so if you came here for that..."

"I had written a whole show before this weekend."

The capacity crowd had been asked to hand mobile phones before the Ego Death Tour show began.

Rock added: "I'm still processing what happened, so at some point I'll talk about that s***. It'll be serious. It'll be funny, but right now I'm going to tell some jokes."

It's the first time Rock has spoken out following the drama at the Dolby Theatre in LA on Sunday night.

It all unfolded after the host made a jibe about Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith, saying he couldn't wait for "GI Jane 2", in reference to the actress' buzzcut.

Smith, who picked up the Best Actor gong for King Richard just moments later, took offence due to his wife's alopecia condition which she's suffered for years.

As he walked back to the stage, Smith was shouting: "Keep my wife's name out of your f****** mouth."

The AI star, 53, issued a public apology to Rock via Instagram on Monday night, which read:

"Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.

"I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.

"I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us.

"I am a work in progress."

Tickets for the Ego Death Tour have rocketed in price since the incident.

Jada Pinkett Smith broke her silence on Tuesday, sharing an image to Instagram which said "the time for healing is now and I'm here for it".

The Academy, which previously said it condoned Smith's actions, said on Wednesday night that disciplinary proceedings have been launched due to Smith violating its Standards of Conduct "including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behaviour and compromising the integrity of the Academy."

The Academy has revealed since that the star was asked to leave the ceremony during the Oscars, but refused.
