Chris Powell leaves role at Tottenham before new season

Chris Powell has decided to leave his role at Tottenham.

Standard Sport understands that former England defender and Charlton boss Powell has opted to leave Spurs after three years in north London.

The 53-year-old was first recruited by Tottenham, then managed by Jose Mourinho, back in the summer of 2020 as a youth coach as part of a restructure of their academy following the departure of John McDermott to the Football Association (FA).

Boyhood Spurs fan Powell later became interim assistant head coach as he continued to work closely with two-time caretaker manager Ryan Mason, before reverting back to his senior role as head of coaching for the club’s youth teams from Under-17 to U21 level.

He had remained in that post under Antonio Conte and most recently Ange Postecoglou, who was appointed as Tottenham’s new permanent head coach in June after Conte’s reign was followed by the temporary stints under Cristian Stellini and Mason, who also did the job briefly after the exit of Mourinho in 2021.

However, Powell has now decided to stand down from that job ahead of the 2023/24 season.

A former England international defender with five caps to his name, Powell had a long and successful playing career as a left-back, most notably with the likes of Charlton, Southend and Derby, also representing Crystal Palace, West Ham, Watford and Leicester before retiring after 23 years in 2010.

He later served as caretaker boss at both Leicester and Derby and also had permanent spells in charge of Charlton, Huddersfield and Southend in the EFL.

Powell also worked as Alan Pardew’s assistant at Dutch club ADO Den Haag for a brief time, while he was also part of the coaching team for England at senior level under Gareth Southgate from 2019 before leaving that position earlier this year.
