Chris Martin makes ambitious Bristol City prediction as Robins looks to break six-month long habit

Derby day hero Chris Martin believes Bristol City have the squad to be challenging towards to the top six, providing everyone stays fit.

The Robins head to Luton Town on Tuesday night looking for their first back-to-back victories of the season following Saturday's crucial 3-2 win over rivals Cardiff.

Of their eight Championship wins this season prior to Saturday, in the following fixture City have drawn three and lost five; a significant reason as to why they remain marooned in lower mid-table, with breathing space above the bottom three but not enough momentum to consistently crack the top half.

Martin was the star of the show with the striker scoring twice, one in each half, as City retained the bragging rights and revelled in doing the double over the Bluebirds this season, also creating a 14-point buffer on the relegation places.

There is no rest for the wicked, however, as focuses turn to 13th-place Luton and Martin believes it's time to find some consistency and start pushing up the table as a win at Kenilworth Road will allow them to leapfrog the Hatters and into a clear mid-table position with eyes then on the top 10.

The 33-year-old said: "I see a lot of teams above us that I feel we can challenge. We need to be more consistent, we have the ability to. We have the players here if we can keep everybody fit to be challenging further up the table and towards the top six.

"So I don't see any reason why not, but it's much easier said than done. (The win) has given us breathing space and allows up to look up the table.

"We need to be more consistent than we have been this season and that's about trying to string results together. We're hoping to use that as a springboard. Our focus now is to go back-to-back, refocus, and try to get three points on Tuesday night."

Manager Nigel Pearson was particularly delighted for Martin after admitting the player has come in for criticism from a section of supporters this season.

Before Saturday, Martin hadn't scored at Ashton Gate since the opening day draw with Blackpool and it was his first strike since finding the net from the spot in the 3-2 defeat at Coventry on November 6.

Martin was fully aware of his goal record and admitted it had been playing on his mind in the build-up to Saturday's victory.

"I thought about that a few weeks ago (not scoring at Ashton Gate since the opening day)," Martin added. "It's about time, to be honest, without trying to be too critical in a moment where you've scored a couple of goals and won the game.

"I'm probably the most critical of my own game. It was much needed and even more sweeter to do it against a rival.

"It's why I'm still in the game, why I'm still doing it after 15 years. Precisely the reason why. You put in all the hours on the training field, all the hours in the gym, for moments like that.

"To see the crowd at the end and to share those moments with the players and the staff and the fans, it's what makes playing this game so special."

City are sweating on the fitness of both defender Rob Atkinson and Andy King for Tuesday after both were forced off injured in the first half against Cardiff. Atkinson is struggling with a back problem while King is likely to be ruled out after sustaining a hamstring injury, his second such problem of the season.
