Former Nottingham Forest manager Chris Hughton has been appointed as the new head coach of the Ghana national team, just over a year after his dismissal from the City Ground.
Hughton replaces former Black Stars boss Otto Addo, who resigned from the role following the nation’s exit from the World Cup at the group stage. Hughton has been working as an advisor for the national team for the last 12 months.
The 64-year-old spent just under a year with Forest, but was sacked following a poor start to the 2021/22 season which left the Reds at the bottom of the Championship table. He was replaced by Steve Cooper, who led the team to promotion via the play-offs at the end of the campaign.

A statement from the Ghana Football Association on Sunday confirmed Hughton’s appointment. “The Ghana Football Association has the pleasure to appoint Chris Hughton as Head Coach of the Black Stars following extensive deliberations between the two parties,” It read.
“The appointment is in line with the vision of the GFA to continue with the project of building a formidable squad that started with Otto Addo in the lead up to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 tournament.”
Hughton will be assisted by Addo’s assistant coaches George Boateng and Mas-Ud Didi. Although the length of the manager’s contract is set to be confirmed ‘in due course’.
The appointment comes just days after the former Brighton and Newcastle manager was linked with a return to Championship football with Huddersfield Town. The Terriers are on the lookout for a new manager following the sacking of Mark Fotheringham.
Hughton’s first game in charge of the Black Stars will see him come up against Angola in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier during the March international break. His team will also face an away tie against the same opponents just eight days after the home game.
