What hiatus?
Hold on tight, Chris Hemsworth fans. The Aussie Thor star announced he was taking a step back from acting last year following his Alzheimer’s warning while filming documentary TV series Limitless, but the roles have been coming thick and fast.
Immediately following the release of his latest film, Extraction 2, last week, it has already been announced that a second sequel is in the works.
When Extraction debuted on Netflix in 2020, it soon clinched Netflix’s biggest movie opening with a staggering 99 million views over the film’s first four weeks.
The follow-up to the 2020 original high-action film sees the Australian play black ops mercenary Tyler Rake return for another deadly mission to save innocent lives in peril – his ex-wife’s sister Ketevan and her children, held hostage by her gangster husband in the world’s deadliest prison.
Extraction 2 is currently the most watched movie on Netflix in Australia and its release even bumped the 2020 original back into the top 10 at No.5.
Soon after the first film, writers and producers the Russo Brothers revealed that they were planning an Extraction cinematic universe.
Sure enough, at Netflix’s Tudum fan event on the weekend Hemsworth and director Sam Hargrave revealed a third film is already in the works.
“Guess what? Between us, as friends, we’re already talking about Extraction 3,” he said to fans gathered in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The first two movies have received rave reviews due to their complex action sequences, with stunts co-ordinated by Hargrave – a former stuntman who first met Hemsworth when Hargrave was the double for Chris Evans on the Marvel movies.
Extraction 2 features a 21-minute action scene staged to appear as if it was done in “one shot”.
Although one reviewer wrote that the action-packed movie “has absolutely no intention of rewriting the rules of the genre”, they conceded the director and his star honour “the extra-ness of action sequels that go to any means necessary to thrust their seemingly invincible heroes into another round of shootouts, beatdowns and physical punishment galore”.
No doubt sequel No.2 will thrust Hemsworth straight back into the hot seat.
