Chris Eubank Jr activates Liam Smith rematch clause as Anfield date still possible

Chris Eubank Jr has confirmed that he has activated his rematch clause to fight Liam Smith.

The Brighton-based boxer confirmed the news on social media on Tuesday morning, just over three weeks after he was beaten by Smith at the AO Arena in Manchester.

Smith stopped Eubank Jr with brutal and clinical authority in the fourth round of their middleweight contest last month. Speculation has been rife since that Eubank would activate the rematch clause that was placed in the deal signed by both fighters last year.

And taking to Twitter, the 33-year-old confirmed the news, saying: “This morning I activated the rematch clause via my lawyers & sent to my promoters @Wasserman Happy Valentines Day @LiamBeefySmith.”

Anfield, the home of Smith's beloved Liverpool Football Club, has been touted as a potential host stadium should the pair agree to a rematch. Speaking recently, BOXXER chief Ben Shalom revealed that he is working on securing Smith a dream night at Anfield at the end of May.

He said: “I think we will have a chance at the end of May and it is going to have to be on that last Premier League weekend to stand any chance before work starts.

“We are working on it all the time. Of course we don’t know yet whether it will be Golovkin, or whether it will be Eubank, we don’t know. Anfield is a dream for Liam Smith. I think he has got the pulling power to fill that stadium twice over.

“That Manchester Arena there was more people in it than there has ever been. I think we could have sold five or 10,000 thousand more tickets just on the night.

“It would be enormous and it would be amazing for the city of Liverpool and for Liverpool fans in general, who have had a tough season.

“I think this is the perfect way for boxing to come to Anfield. It might not happen again and we are going to put as much pressure as we can and hopefully at the end of May we might be able to make that dream a reality.”
