News host Chris Cuomo was helped by therapy after being “s—canned” by CNN in December 2021, he says in a new interview.
“I was gonna’ kill everybody, including myself,” he said on former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci’s “Open Book” podcast Wednesday. “Things can consume you.”
According to Cuomo, he pulled himself together because “I have too many people counting on me.”
Cuomo and Scaramucci commiserated about the shame of losing high-profile jobs in spectacular fashion.
Scaramucci was fired after 10 days in former President Donald Trump’s administration because he made disparaging public comments about two former cabinet members.
CNN said it booted Cuomo for helping his brother, the former governor, manage sexual misconduct claims that eventually led to his resignation.
Cuomo was also accused of sexual harassment by former colleagues. The 52-year-old newsman asked an arbitrator in March to award him $125 million for CNN’s “unlawful” dismissal after nearly nine years on the job.
He credited “one great piece of advice” from his shrink for helping him move past his personal pain.
“Your life changed — you are in the s—, not your kids,” he was told. “Their lives stay the same.”
Cuomo returned to television in July as an anchor for NewsNation, which draws less than 10% the viewership of CNN, according to the Washington Post. He admits “it’s kind of embarrassing” speaking to such a small audience, but says “I’m trying to build something.”
His show “Cuomo” airs at 8 p.m. ET on weeknights, competing with ratings giant Tucker Carlson on Fox News, Chris Hayes at MSNBC and Anderson Cooper on CNN.
