A special team of the Central Bureau of Investigation on Saturday conducted searches at the residence of Congress MP Karti P. Chidambaram here in connection with finding proof in an ongoing case.
Sources in the agency said nine almirahs were opened in the presence of Karti Chidambaram’s wife. Some documents and electronic gadgets were seized.
The almirahs could not be opened during the searches held on May 17 this year since the keys were not available. Investigators sealed the premises where the almirahs were located.
The CBI had registered a case against Mr. Karti, his close associate S. Bhaskar Raman, private companies based in Mumbai, Mansa (Punjab), and unknown public servants and private persons.
The case involves an alleged scam in the re-issue of project visas for Chinese nationals who were engaged in a power project work in Punjab in 2011. A bribe of ₹50 lakh was allegedly paid to Mr Bhaskar Raman for facilitating the re-issue of project visas.
The investigating agency had said in the First Information Report (FIR) that there were constant email communications between Mr. Makharia, the representative of the beneficiary firm, Mr. Raman and Mr. Karti. Mr. Makharia HD also sent an email thanking Mr. Karti and even attached a copy of the permission letter given for the re-issue of project visas.
