Beijing considers Taiwan an integral part of China, and even though the Chinese Communist Party has never governed the island, it still refuses to rule out taking it by force. In Taiwan, historical narrative is at the heart of political debates during the current electoral season. For the opposition KMT party, there is no doubt: Taiwan's culture is Chinese. For the ruling progressives at the DPP, a new national narrative has gained traction: one that gives more importance to all the island's ethnic groups and minorities.
