China to improve ties with Taiwan after visit by opposition leader

  • China has announced the resumption of certain ties with Taiwan, including direct flights to mainland cities and imports of Taiwanese aquaculture products.
  • This decision follows a visit to Beijing by Cheng Li-wun, leader of Taiwan's opposition Kuomintang party, who held a high-profile meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
  • China's Communist Party's Taiwan Work Office said it would explore establishing a long-term communication mechanism with Taiwan’s Kuomintang Party.
  • The measures reverse previous suspensions, such as import bans on various Taiwanese agricultural products since 2021 and restrictions on individual Chinese travel to Taiwan since 2019.
  • Additionally, China indicated plans to work towards constructing a bridge connecting the Taiwanese islands of Matsu and Kinmen.
