Chinese police punished 10 people accused of spreading false information online about the Gyirong flood disaster, including claims that thousands had died and official casualty figures were being concealed. The cybersecurity department of China’s ministry of public security said most cases involved fabricated or exaggerated death tolls circulated online. One user, surnamed Liu, claimed over 3,000 people had died, while another shared a post saying, “The news reports 1,400 fatalities, but in reality 3,000 people had previously been reported missing.”
