China And Russia Strengthen Defense Cooperation Amid Rising Tensions

China and Russia find common cause in Israel-Hamas crisis.

Chinese and Russian defense officials have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation during recent meetings in Beijing, signaling a deepening alignment between the two nations. The United States and its allies have been closely monitoring this development.

Russian defense chief Andrey Belousov expressed that both countries share common views, assessments of the situation, and understanding of the necessary collaborative actions. He emphasized the need to bolster and advance their strategic partnership.

The visit marked Belousov's first to China since assuming his position in May and precedes an anticipated visit by Chinese leader Xi Jinping to Russia. The strengthening of security coordination between Russia and China has been evident through increased joint military drills, aimed at signaling to the West that while they are not formal allies, they are not isolated either.

During the meetings, discussions centered on deepening military relations, safeguarding national sovereignty, security, and development interests, as well as jointly upholding international and regional peace and stability. This commitment was reiterated by both sides.

The visit by the Russian defense chief coincides with preparations for Xi Jinping's attendance at a BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, underscoring the economic partnership between Moscow and Beijing as an alternative to the US-led Group of Seven.

The US and its allies have closely scrutinized the growing diplomatic exchanges and security collaboration between China and Russia. Accusations have been made against Beijing for allegedly supporting Russia's actions in Ukraine through the supply of dual-use goods. However, China has defended its trade with Russia as normal and claims neutrality in the conflict.

Recent joint patrols by Chinese and Russian coast guards in the Arctic Ocean and naval exercises in the Pacific Ocean have further demonstrated their enhanced cooperation. Notably, China's military conducted large-scale drills around Taiwan, sending a stern warning to pro-independence forces on the island.

As tensions escalate in regions like the South China Sea, where China asserts territorial claims, the collaboration between China and Russia is being closely monitored by global powers. The ongoing interactions between the two nations reflect a strategic alignment that could have significant implications for international geopolitics.
