- Chiltern Railways has become the latest train operator to move into public ownership, running services between London Marylebone, the West Midlands, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.
- From December, 25 additional daily Chiltern services will provide 10,000 extra seats each weekday to tackle “overcrowding”, according to the Department for Transport .
- Rail minister Lord Hendy said: “Every transfer into public ownership gives us the chance to tackle the bread-and-butter issues people care about – more frequent, comfortable trains that turn up on time.”
- Chiltern is the sixth operator nationalised by the Government, with Great Western Railway scheduled to follow on 13 December.
- Govia Thameslink Railway as well as c2c, Greater Anglia, South Western Railway and West Midlands Trains have previously been brought into public ownership by the Government.
