A beloved football coach described as an "inspiration" has tragically died at the age of 30, North Wales Live reports. Tributes have poured in for the former footballer who died after being diagnosed with cancer.
Mike Edwards, from Saltney, passed away earlier this week. He has been described as a much-loved figure at his local club, Saltney Town Football Club, where he served as a player, goalkeeping coach and junior coach.
He was also a huge part of the club's successful futsal team who were the third best team in Wales a few seasons ago. Mike leaves behind his mum Diana and brother Chris, and hundreds of people across the North Wales football community have paid their tributes on social media.
In a tribute on their Facebook page, Saltney Town FC said: "We've had the devastating news that our beloved friend Mike Edwards has passed away following his brave fight with cancer. An inspiration over these last six months, you'll forever be remembered Eddy.
"Our thoughts are with your family and many friends. RIP Mike."
Saltney Town FC secretary Marc Edwards explained just how popular Mike was at the club. He said: "He was just an amazing lad. Running a club like ours, it's not just about playing it's all the extras that come with running a club - if anything needed doing Mike would be the first person offering to help.
"He was just brilliant and he'll be such a huge loss. I know all the kids will be gutted and absolutely everyone at the club will be - he was such a huge part of this club."
Gresford Athletic FC posted on Twitter: "RIP Mike. Condolences to his family, friends and everybody associated with the club. Former Rhyl and Flint Town United manager and current Runcorn Town boss Niall McGuinness said: "God bless. Thoughts are with family and friends."
Cefn Albion FC manager Sean Jones said: "RIP Mike. Thoughts are with the family and loved ones." Cefn Druids futsal coach Richie Jones added: "Thoughts are with Mike's family and the Saltney family. Mike was a great futsal keeper and an even better guy, both Saltney and Mike were a huge part of the development of futsal in North Wales."
