Safety measures have been stepped up at a Paisley nursery after a child climbed out of a window and left the premises unchecked.
The youngster left Rainbow Nursery on an unknown date last month and was returned to the Fullarton Road centre by a member of the public.
Details of the incident were shared in a formal letter to parents last week.
Nursery manager Alan Cunningham said he was “deeply sorry” for what had occurred, promising it would “never happen again”.
In the letter - shared with the Express - he also confirmed the Care Inspectorate had been contacted over the safety breach.
He said: “Unfortunately a child was able to climb out of window of the nursery and leave the premises.
“The incident was very quickly contained, the child was returned to the nursery unharmed by a local resident.
“It is our top priority to ensure that your children are kept safe and we are so thankful that the child was unharmed in this situation.
“We cannot apologise enough to the child’s parents and we are working to support the family through this.”
Explaining the incident happened a few weeks ago, Mr Cunningham said he had not been able to inform parents before due to an investigation.
Rainbow Nursery is run by Childcare First, a registered charity which operates the nursery on a not-for-profit basis.
Its purpose-built facility is situated within the grounds of the Mossvale Primary School campus and provides care for children aged 0 to five living within the Shortroods community.
It has not been formally inspected since 2018 but the national watchdog has confirmed it is monitoring the standard of care.
“This incident was taken very seriously,” Mr Cunningham said.
“The nursery has carried out an investigation into what lead to the incident and have been working closely with Renfrewshire Council and Care Inspectorate to agree on appropriate actions.
“We have discussed this incident at length with staff, refreshing their knowledge on company policies and procedures, certain members of staff have been appropriately disciplined and the nursery has implemented further safety measures to ensure this never happens again.”
He added: “I understand this information may cause concerns and be very upsetting to parents.
“I would be more than happy to speak with anyone who may have any questions regarding this.
“Once again on behalf of Rainbow Nursery, we are deeply sorry that this incident was allowed to happen and we will do everything we can to ensure nothing like this ever happens again.”
A spokesperson for the Care Inspectorate said: “The Care Inspectorate has been notified of an incident involving a child attending this nursery.
“We remain in close contact with the service and continue to monitor them. The safety of every child who experiences care is always our first priority.
