Child Benefit £21.80 explained as claimants receive lower payments

People across Scotland and the UK who claim Child Benefit were left confused after receiving a smaller-than-expected sum in their bank account on Friday.

Child Benefit is a benefit intended to offer financial support to parents or guardians of children under the age of 16, or anyone under the age of 20 who is in full-time education or training.

Most claimants receive their money on a monthly basis, but single parents or those getting certain other benefits like Income Support can have it paid weekly.

Claimants receive £21.80 a week for their eldest child, and £14.45 for each additional child.

However, parents and guardians have taken to social media sites like Twitter and Facebook expressing their confusion after receiving less money than usual.

Why am I only getting £21.80 in Child Benefit?

The reason why many claimants have received a lower Child Benefit payment than usual is due to the Queen's Jubilee bank holiday weekend.

In cases where Child Benefit payments fall on a bank holiday week, HMRC may send the money early.

As a result, many claimants have had their monthly payments been split up, meaning they have only been given the cash for one week — £21.80.

The remainder of the money they are due will be paid next week, and does not need to be chased up.

Taking to Twitter to explain, HMRC wrote: "If you are a Child Benefit customer, you may get full or partial payments earlier than expected due to the upcoming bank holidays.

"Customers don’t need to call - everyone will still get their full payment by their expected date."
