With the benefit of catching balls from the best quarterback in the NFL, Kansas City Chiefs’ rookie Skyy Moore could be one of the biggest sleepers of the 2022 NFL draft. Brought in after the team traded star receiver Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins, Moore has an opportunity to compete for a meaningful volume of targets in the most exciting offense in football, all in his first season as a professional athlete.
This level of competition is a far cry from his days playing in the MAC at Western Michigan, and adjustments will need to be made before he can thrive against the best of the best. Perhaps the most important aspect of his development will come from his ability to create a rapport with MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes and become part of a cohesive unit with all the other receivers on the roster.
He spoke to reporters last weekend about the time he spent with Mahomes in Texas during the offseason, saying that he felt the connection was already being made between himself and the generational talent that will be slinging him the ball this year.
“Going into a session with [Mahomes] you always learn something,” Moore explained, “So, [I] was just trying to get into that routine, build that chemistry down there and it was real hot that’s what I remember about everything. As far as how to run my routes and what he wants. You know it’s all about what he wants and the chemistry between the wide receivers and the quarterback. I’m just trying to feel what he needs from me.”
That connection will prove crucial if Moore is to fill the gap Hill’s departure left in the structure of the Chiefs’ offense, but if his words are any indication, he is well on his way to figuring out how to make an impact. More reps in training camp will help keep the momentum the duo is bringing into St. Joseph, and with any luck, they’ll continue to develop together before the season officially kicks off in September.
