The Kansas City Chiefs have signed another tight end to a reserve/future contract after having him in for a workout a week ago.
According to the NFL’s official personnel notice for Friday, the Chiefs have signed TE Josh Pederson on a reserve/future deal. This is a notable signing because Josh is the son of former Chiefs assistant coach and new Jaguars HC Doug Pederson.
A First-Team All-Sun Belt tight end at Louisiana Monroe, Josh appeared in 44 games with 33 starts during his 5-year career, recording 99 catches for 1,191 yards and 11 touchdowns. Despite his productive collegiate career, the 6-5 and 235-pound tight end went undrafted following the 2021 NFL draft. He caught on with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent during the offseason, but he was released during 53-man roster cuts. He signed with the New Orleans Saints shortly after his departure from San Francisco, but he didn’t last too long on their roster.
The Chiefs have already signed four tight ends to reserve/future contracts ahead of the 2022 offseason. That group includes Nakia Griffin-Stewart, Mark Vital, Matt Bushman and Jordan Franks. They have two players at the position — Blake Bell (unrestricted) and Jody Fortson (exclusive rights) — slated to become free agents in March.
Pederson should have the opportunity to compete this offseason, but the Chiefs are clearly looking to make it a competition with all of the depth they’ve added so far.
