The Kansas City Chiefs haven’t been shy about getting undrafted free agents involved over the years.
Players like Tommy Townsend, Tershawn Wharton, Darrel Williams, Daniel Sorensen and Jody Fortson didn’t hear their name called in the draft, but they have each made significant impacts during their time in Kansas City. Tulsa RB Deneric Prince might be the next beneficiary of Chiefs HC Andy Reid’s willingness to play the best players regardless of draft status.
Speaking to reporters following rookie minicamp, Reid gave his first impressions of Prince.
“Yeah, I like him,” Reid said. “So, he’s a good-looking kid, picked things up well, (his) size – I mean that’s the thing that jumps out at you. Size, strength and he caught the ball well. We knew he could run it. We’ll see how he does once we get to that point. But we’ve seen that on tape.”
Prince caught just 17 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown in four seasons at college. Hearing that Reid was impressed with his catching likely means it wasn’t something he was asked to do often at either Tulsa and Texas A&M, not that he was incapable as a receiver. In fact, he opened some eyes at the East-West Shrine Bowl with that part of his game.
Obviously, Reid won’t get a look at Prince as a runner until much later this offseason during training camp thud periods. However, he seemed to have an air of confidence that Prince will be just fine in that regard.
