Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo on Tyreek Hill: ‘You do have to treat him differently’

The wild card matchup for the Kansas City Chiefs against the Miami Dolphins is expected to include below-freezing temperatures on Saturday night. The heat could be on the field as Tyreek Hill makes his much-anticipated return to Arrowhead Stadium.

Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has known Hill for a few seasons since joining Kansas City. During Wednesday’s press conference, he spoke with reporters about the plan to slow down the league’s top wide receiver.

“He practices just as fast as he does when he plays the game,” Spagnuolo explained. “We saw it all: you do have to treat him differently. I think our guys understand that proper leverage, if we’re in man, proper leverage. If you’re in zone, you know, have eleven times two is twenty-two, have twenty-two eyeballs on him. Know where he is all the time even, that’s part of what we’ve been saying. Because he could hurt you in a lot of different ways. I mean, they hand the ball off to him, sweep and throw it to him, screens, the whole thing.”

Hill enters Saturday’s Wild Card game with 119 catches, 1,799 yards, and 13 touchdowns, earning another Pro Bowl selection. The Chiefs hope to repeat their coverage from Week 9 in Germany to slow down the speedy star.
