Over the weekend before the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, a series of shootings occurred, resulting in a significant number of casualties. According to the Chicago Police Department, there were 26 shooting incidents from Friday evening to Sunday night, with a total of 30 individuals being shot, including both fatal and non-fatal cases.
Tragically, five individuals lost their lives due to the shootings, with an additional person being shot and killed by police officers after critically wounding two victims. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is currently investigating this officer-involved shooting, with the Chicago Police Department cooperating fully.
One of the latest incidents involved a 35-year-old man who was found with multiple gunshot wounds to the face early Monday morning. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Another victim, a 59-year-old man, was shot in the chest while sitting on a porch and is currently in serious condition.
In a separate incident, a 28-year-old male victim was found with multiple gunshot wounds and later pronounced dead at the hospital. Police recovered a handgun at the scene but have not made any arrests yet.
Another shooting involved a 17-year-old male who tragically lost his life after sustaining gunshot wounds to the stomach and back. A 16-year-old male was also injured in the same incident.
Authorities are actively investigating these incidents, including a fatal shooting involving a suspect described as an African American male seen fleeing the scene. The victim, a male in his 30s, succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained during a verbal altercation.
These tragic events have prompted heightened police presence in Chicago, with concerns about potential unrest during the Democratic National Convention. Businesses have taken precautions by boarding up windows in anticipation of possible protests and riots.
