So, this is it. After a titanic struggle with Wrexham over the course of the regular National League season to win promotion to the EFL, Notts County now get a second bite at the cherry when they take on Chesterfield in the play-off final at Wembley Stadium.
The Magpies have smashed record after record during a remarkable season, shattering the 100-point barrier but still pipped for the title by the resurgent Welshmen, backed by their Hollywood owners.
But all is not lost for Notts. One game, just 90 minutes or so if extra time can be avoided, and they could be ready to take their place back in the Football League after four seasons away.
But to do that they must get past another EFL exile in Chesterfield, who finished third in the table, 23 points worse off than County. Their regular season encounters included a 2-2 draw at Meadow Lane back in August, while Notts won at 2-1 at Chesterfield in February after their hosts were reduced to 10 men.
Both needed extra time to get through their play-off semi-final encounters at the weekend, Notts staging an epic rally to edge out Boreham Wood 3-2, while the Spireites shrugged off a late equaliser to go on and beat Bromley by the same scoreline.
