Chester Zoo has announced its doors will remain closed today and tomorrow, July 18 and 19.
The popular family attraction confirmed the news to customers via email and on social media over the weekend, after extreme weather was forecast for Cheshire. Record temperatures are predicted to hit the UK this week and an amber warning is in place.
According to the zoo, the decision was made to “ensure the safety of our staff, visitors, animals and plants”. The zoo emailed its decision in an email to customers and took to social media to share what those who already had tickets booked should do.

In the email, the zoo said: “Hello, It's due to be a bit hot out there tomorrow! The Met Office has issued a red weather warning as temperatures in Chester are due to reach a scorching 35°C over the next couple of days.
“Due to these extreme temperatures, we’re sorry to say we’re going to have to keep our gates closed on Monday 18 & Tuesday 19 July to ensure the safety of our staff, visitors, animals and plants. Don’t worry, the animals will be looked after and kept cool under the watchful eyes of our amazing zookeepers.
“Thankfully, it’s forecast to be much cooler later in the week and so we hope to be open again from Wednesday morning (please check our website and social media channels for updates and confirmation).
“We are so, so sorry for postponing any plans to visit and we really hope you’ll understand. Stay safe and we look forward to welcoming you to the zoo soon. Chester Zoo”.
In a post on Facebook, the zoo explained that anyone with pre-booked tickets for July 18 and 19 would have their tickets automatically extended until July 2023. Customers are advised to keep their booking confirmation in order to get their hands on their extended tickets.
The zoo says it plans to be back open on Wednesday, July 20, when the weather is expected to drop in temperature.
