Chess Olympiad: Gold all but assured after India men beat top seeds USA; women also in the running for golden finish

Gold India D Gukesh R Vaishali Fabiano Caruana Chess Olympiad Erigaisi Arjun United States Vidit Gujrathi Divya Deshmukh

India have all but won their first-ever Chess Olympiad men’s team gold medal with a round to spare. The official coronation — barring huge misfortune or improbable results — is on Sunday. The 11th and last round will be played in Budapest, Hungary, from 2.30pm IST.

Second seeds India defeated top seeds USA 2.5-1.5 on Saturday. D Gukesh and Erigaisi Arjun won their games after R Praggnanandhaa lost to Wesley So and Vidit Gujrathi held Levon Aronian to a draw. Gukesh added to his growing stature and scored a fascinating win over none other than Fabiano Caruana.
