Fans expecting to see Cheryl on stage in the West End this evening were left disappointed, as the star was replaced for tonight's performance of 2:22 A Ghost Story.
The Girls Aloud singer, 39, has been playing Jenny in the play since January this year after taking over the role from Laura Whitmore.
While her absence seemed to come as a shock to many going to the show, a representative for the star confirmed to the Mirror that it was actually announced earlier in the week - but that hasn't stopped fans sharing their disappointment online.
The rep said: "It was a pre-agreed day off, which was announced earlier this week."
The singer has received a number of rave reviews for her performances to date, but Sunday's audience were instead set to watch actress Gemma Yates-Round in the role.
The news of Cheryl's absence was visible in a statement on the show's website, which read: "The producers cannot guarantee the appearance of a particular artist at any performance. Appearance could be subject to many factors including illness and holidays.
"No refunds or exchanges will be offered as a result of a cast member’s unavailability to perform at any performance.
"Please note that Cheryl will not be performing on Sunday 19th March."
Fans took to Twitter ahead of the show to speculate as to why Cheryl was absent, with some questioning whether it was due to Mother's Day, while others thought it could have been due to son Bear's upcoming sixth birthday.
One user wrote: "I specifically avoided this week as it's Mother's Day and Bear's birthday, didn't want to risk it!"
Another added their devastation at Cheryl's no show but admitted it didn't spoil the occasion. They said: "So went to see @222aghoststory today and found out @cherylofficial was off!
"But fair play to Gemma Yates-Round you did amazing! All cast were outstanding"
They later joked they still managed to see the star - as they posed next to artwork on the nearby streets. Uploading the pics, the user said: "Still managed to get a pic with @CherylOfficial today!! And found her on some street art by the theatre! @222aghoststory"
A third seemed less than impressed when they found out the news earlier in the morning as they penned: "so you’re telling me i’m on my way to london to see 2:22 and cheryl is apparently having a day off."
Cheryl's co-star, former EastEnders actor Jake Wood, said last month crowds had been "blown away" by the songstress' brilliant debut.
