CHENNAI: Four years from now, pedestrians could walk right under the elevated metro rail corridors to cross busy roads and junctions, as Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is planning to build skywalks that will give commuters easy access to phase-2 stations and also double as elevated footpaths.
Similar to those built in Hongkong and Bangkok elevated metro lines, these elevated walkways, which may cross under the elevated corridors linking either side of the road, will be covered to provide shade for metro rail commuters and pedestrians. Metrorail has planned to build skywalks under elevated corridors crossing through busy areas like OMR, busy junctions and stations that are likely to get high footfalls.
