CHENNAI: A fire broke out at a salon in Mylapore in the wee hours of Tuesday, leaving four women employees trapped in their room. They were rescued by fire and rescue services personnel and taken to a private hospital where they were treated as out-patients.
“They are all safe,” said a police officer quoting the doctors. The fire, which was controlled after a battle of about half an hour, was triggered by a spark from a faulty air-conditioner unit in the staff room.
Police said a woman named Leena, who owns a nail artistry unit at an apartment complex at CIT Colony, engaged Reena Gupta, 30, of Uttar Pradesh and Nagaland natives Solna Sangh, 27, Aleem Laasang, 27, and Moniyo, 23, as employees.
Early on Tuesday, the women were asleep when the fire spread all over their bedroom. They went to the balcony and cried for help. One of their neighbours Dr Archana, employed in the vascular department at Kauvery Hospital, asked the hospital staff to inform the fire personnel and police.
Raja, an ambulance driver, was informed and he called the police control room. A team led by Ajay Kumar, a sub-inspector of the Mylapore station, rushed to the spot. A team of fire personnel also arrived.
Prathap, a fireman wearing safety gear, climbed to the third floor and the four women were brought down with the help of a the rope ladder. Police said the fire engulfed almost all the furniture and home appliances in the hall.
Earlier, on Monday evening, a fire broke out at an IAS officer’s cabin in the survey and settlement department on Kamarajar Salai. The department commissioner, Vinay, spotted smoke emanating from his cabin on the second floor of the building and the fire control room was alerted.
Tamil Nadu Fire and rescue Services (TNFRS) personnel from Triplicane rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire before it could spread to the other parts of the building. While none was injured in the accident, a lot of furniture was damaged. The Anna Square police registered a case and initial inquiries about the accident showed that a short circuit in an air-conditioner caused the fire.
