Cheltenham Festival 2023: Punter wins over £40,000 from 50p accumulator

A lucky punter was celebrating a huge Cheltenham Festival windfall after scooping over £40,000 from a 50p acca bet.

In a speculative bet the William Hill customer, a 42-year-old woman from the West Midlands, picked a horse in each of Wednesday’s seven races for the each-way accumulator which cost £1.

Among the selections on day two of the meeting were Bronn at 50-1, Lieutenant Rocco at 100-1 and Captain Teague at 33-1, all of whom were placed.

Only one of her picks actually won, Impaire Et Passe at 5-2, but thanks to monster-priced horses running into places in the remaining races, they pocketed huge returns of £40,929.31.

Without William Hill’s Extra Places offering, Captain Conby, who finished sixth at 15-2, and Lieutenant Rocco, fourth, would have been settled as losers and the punter wouldn’t have received a single penny.

William Hill spokesperson, Lee Phelps, said: “You’ve got to take your hat off to one of our customers who scooped over £40k at the Cheltenham Festival yesterday thanks in no small part to our extra places offers.

“The punter’s selections included Bronn at 50/1, Lieutenant Rocco at 100/1 and Captain Teague at 33/1, who all placed, and they were left celebrating a win of £40,929.31. We’ll be keeping an eye on whatever they’re backing for the rest of the Festival!”

Bookmakers have endured a bruising first two days of the Cheltenham Festival with half of the winners starting favourite or joint favourite and other well-backed horses going in.

On Wednesday Brighton owner and punter Tony Bloom landed one of the biggest bets of any Festival when winning £580,000 after staking £400,000 at odds of 6-5 on his own horse Energumene winning the Queen Mother Champion Chase with Star Sports Bookmakers who reported losing £830,000 on the race.
