Cheltenham Festival 2022 day one tips as Garry Owen picks his winner for the Supreme Novices Hurdle

The countdown to Cheltenham Festival is well and truly on.

Just one more sleep until the first of four extraordinary days of racing begins.

And after that attention will turn to the Grand National at Aintree.

Our man Garry Owen picks out his best bets and selections every day right here.

Here's a preview to Day 1 of the festival.

DYSART DYNAMO (1:30) can spark the celebrations in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle on Day 1 of the Cheltenham Festival.

Willie Mullins’ horse was a red-hot favourite ahead of his debut in a Clonmel bumper last March.

And he totally justified that confidence with a power-packed defeat of More Than A Memory .

Ridden more prominently, the gelding improved again by routing Gordon Dai Dai at Punchestown.

Those triumphs meant that big things were expected of the six-year-old ahead of his timber career.

The six-year-old duly delivered when showing Lucky Tenner no mercy on debut at Cork in December.

He quickly shrugged off a step up to Grade 2 level when slamming Westerner back at Punchestown.

The star is ideal for this Grade 1 so he can lead his rivals a merry dance round the sharp Old Course.

The Closutton Maestro can immediately add the Arkle Trophy to his tally with BLUE LORD (2:10).

The son of Blue Bresil was good enough to finish third in a Grade 1 novice hurdle at Punchestown.

However, it was always obvious that this strapping type’s future lay over the larger obstacles.

The seven-year-old confirmed that impression with an effortless defeat of El Barra on debut at Cork.

He gained more valuable experience when galloping all over the talented Lifetime Ambition at Naas.

The gelding didn’t please everyone when chinning Riviere D'etel in the Irish Arkle at Leopardstown.

That was still a cracking performance so this class act can get the better of his old rival once again.

Nigel Twiston-Davies is a dab hand with stayers so I’m on FANTASTIKAS (2:50) in the Ultima Chase.

The strapping gelding always seemed to be marking time over timber despite some sterling efforts.

He certainly relished switching to fences when hammering Pemberley first time out at Lingfield.

The seven-year-old was unlucky to meet the high-class Threeunderthrufive in a Doncaster Grade 2.

He ran well again when third to potential superstar L'homme Presse over an inadequate 2m 4f here.

The son of Davidoff enjoyed a nice confidence-booster when outpointing Queenohearts at Lingfield.

There is plenty more to come from this strong-traveller who can strike for his thriving connections.

HONEYSUCKLE (3:30) can write yet another chapter in her legend in the Unibet Champion Hurdle.

Henry De Bromhead’s eight-year-old totally demolished the timber elite in this Grade 1 a year ago.

She was every bit as dominant when brushing regular whipping boy Sharjah aside at Punchestown.

The mare showed she was still improving when crushing Ronald Pump on her return at Fairyhouse.

The superstar then added the Irish Champion at Leopardstown to her CV with the minimum of fuss.

The daughter of Sulamani is a true great so she retain her crown under old ally Rachael Blackmore.

MARTELLO SKY (4:10) can soar for the underrated Lucy Wadham in the Close Brothers’ Hurdle.

The mare ran better than the bare result when eighth over two miles in last year’s Dawn Run here.

The six-year-old relished returning to 2m 4f when cosily denying Sandymount Rose on her return.

Impressive on her comeback at Market Rasen, she didn’t look at home on the faster track at Aintree.

The grey bounced back with a game defeat of the talented Indefatigable over course and distance.

She then booked her place in this Grade 1 by cruising to victory from Anythingforlove at Sandown.

The daughter of Martaline is unexposed so she rates a value bet under big-race expert Bryony Frost.

The Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle is as trappy as ever but I’m backing HMS SEAHORSE (4:50).

The son of Galileo showed some decent form on the Flat for Aidan O’Brien over the last two years.

Those efforts led to the four-year-old being sold to shrewd Paul Nolan for a career over timber.

That looked a sound decision when he was third to the classy Pied Piper on debut at Punchestown.

The gelding improved again when giving The Tide Turns most resistance back at the Meath venue.

The strong-traveller finally opened his account by decisively defeating Global Exp ort at Fairyhouse.

This huge prize has clearly been the target ever since so he can take full advantage of a kind mark.

VANILLIER (5:30) can kick off a big week for Gavin Cromwell by landing the National Hunt Chase.

The grey handled this track well when crushing Oscar Elite in last year’s Albert Bartlett Hurdle.

Not as good as Punchestown, the seven-year-old was expected to resume his rise over fences.

He did his reputation no harm with a fine third over 2m 4f on debut in a warm Down Royal novice.

The grey built on that effort when thrashing Fancy Foundations back over 2m 6f at Punchestown.

The gelding then stayed on nicely when third to Fury Road in a three-mile Grade 1 at Leopardstown.

The seven-year-old put in another good shift when filling the same position behind Stattler at Naas.

The tough campaigner will love this gruelling test of stamina so he can power to victory up the hill.

DESARAY GIRL (2:30) can complete a hat-trick at Sedgefield for skilled handler Micky Hammond.

Impressive at Ayr, the hurdler stayed on track when edging out Merry Mistress at Market Rasen.

The mare remains well-treated on her old form so she can defy a welter-burden in a weaker race.

Noel Kelly does well when raiding the UK so I’m taking ELLAAT (3:50) in the handicap hurdle.

The gelding can gain compensation for trying to live with the improving Anyharminasking here.
