Chelsea Women have signed Hannah Hampton on a free transfer after her contract with Aston Villa expired.
The 22-year-old has signed a three-year contract at Kingsmeadow and the deal will be officially announced before she flies out with England to the Women’s World Cup in Australia.
Chelsea are now overstocked with goalkeepers, with Ann-Katrin Berger, Zecira Musovic, Nicky Evrard and Emily Orman all on the books, but couldn’t pass up the opportunity to sign Hampton.
She is already in talks with Brighton over a season-long loan deal with Evrard likely to stay and compete against Berger and Musovic. Orman could also go out on loan next season.
Emma Hayes’s Double winners have been ambitious in the transfer window this summer, already securing early deals for Maika Hamano, Sjoeke Nusken, Catarina Macario, Ashley Lawrence, Alejandra Bernabe and Evrard.
Hampton, meanwhile, will fly with Sarina Weigman’s England squad to Australia on Wednesday after regaining her place following a successful season with Aston Villa, helping her side to finish fifth in the Women’s Super League (WSL) table.
She will wear the No13 shirt with the Lionesses and deputise for Manchester United’s Mary Earps, who is England’s current No1.
