Chelsea: Why Filip Jorgensen is not in the matchday squad to face Newcastle

Filip Jorgensen has been left out of Chelsea’s squad ahead of their game against Newcastle with a groin injury.

Liam Rosenior said in his pre-match press conference on Friday that Jorgensen had been struggling with a groin issue, and the Danish goalkeeper has failed to pass a late fitness test.

Jorgensen’s injury means Robert Sanchez starts in goal after being dropped to the bench for Chelsea’s 5-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

It was Jorgensen’s mistake that allowed Paris Saint-Germain to take a 3-2 lead at the Parc des Princes, raising questions about whether he would start against Newcastle.

The 23-year-old’s injury, though, means he is now set to spend a period on the sidelines, with Sanchez given an opportunity to impress.

Sanchez’s last start came in the FA Cup against 10-man Wrexham as Chelsea won in extra-time to book their place in the quater-finals.

Sanchez endured a difficult night and was at fault for Wrexham’s opening goal, after coming off his line before quickly retreating as Sam Smith gave the Championship side the lead in the first-half.

The 28-year-old’s last league start came against Arsenal, where he struggled to deal with the Gunners’ set-piece threat.

Chelsea are looking to put pressure on Manchester United and Aston Villa in the race for the Champions League with a victory over Newcastle tonight.
